As a Body of Water
Water, with its many associations to emotion and memory, is often made metaphor for the depths of our subconscious, the source of our being or of cleansing and renewal. Not unlike our dreams, water can also be understood as a vector for desire, transformation and change. Theorist Astrida Niemans understands the agency of water phenomenologically through the figuration of bodies of water, which act to simultaneously determine, connect and erode our boundaries with ourselves and the world around us:
“A watery body sloshes and leaks, excretes and perspires. Its depths gurgle, erupt. A body of water also extends, transcorporeally, into other assemblages: watershed, cistern, sea; and other bodies that are human, vegetable, animal, and hydrogeological. … While the individual body might seek to bracket, subdue, or tame these channels and flows, the body could not live without them. They sustain a sense of subject-self as much as they challenge that subject-body's coherence.” (Astrida Niemans, Bodies of Water, 46)
From this starting point, one could imagine or dream up some potential gestures that go beyond the human and towards an embodied experience of water: How do we flow, melt, erode, soak, flood or float? Can a river thirst? Does a glacier perspire in the heat? Is a wave’s desire to grind a stone down to sand? Is a flood overcoming its boundaries? Watery embodiment inspires a dreamscape of more-than-human sensory experience, where a landscape moves in reverie and an ecosystem of fluid desires governs the flow of our experience. By dreaming of watery gestures, we might learn to better empathize with the more-than-human.
