In Mayan communities of Chiapas, Mexico, traditional Indigenous midwives play an essential role in the maternal health of their communities. Their ancestral knowledge has been passed down through generations. These photographs document the plight of these midwives, and the women they serve.
The exhibit is sponsored by Global Pediatric Alliance, a non-profit organization working to reduce maternal and newborn mortality in Latin America through grassroots empowerment, community healthcare and education.
