Cinema Iran: Offside (2006)

Welcome to the fourth edition of Cinema Iran, a pop-up theater screening free Iranian films and sharing community, popcorn, and lavashak!

.

In the spirit of the Women's World Cup, we're screening Jafar Panahi's "Offside" (2006). Due to the ban against Iranian women entering sports stadiums, a group of girls disguise themselves as boys to attend the national team's World Cup qualifying match in Tehran. The film chronicles their arrest by soldiers and the two groups' struggles to watch the game in spite of the law. It was filmed at the actual match, blurring documentary and reality.

.

This spring, Panahi was released from a seven-month prison sentence after a hunger strike -- not his first in a lifetime of making art against the regime. His work documents the ironies of Iranian society across gender and class with poetry and humor. "Offside" won the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize at the 2006 Berlinale.
